If you have a digital lifestyle, then you must know what a Photo Manager is. Yes you know, it's that piece of software you use to store and sort all your photos and albums, and do whatever you like to do with them like uploading to flickr, printing and stuff. Please tell me you're not stuck with the old ACDSee folder-browsing experience of the old Windows 95 days.

Also, I take it you know what a Music Manager software is. Yep, same thing as photos but for mp3s, and all of the sorting principles are quite different with playlists, albums, DJing features, access to music stores, and mp3 player management etc.

Well you saw it coming, a Video Manager software is to bring you the same usefulness in the context of video tracks. That's what PUMP is, and the most notable feature dedicated to the shrine of Media Management Software, is...

I wouldn't bet nobody ever thought of it before we did, but I honestly have never seen that implemented in any Video software, be it a manager, player, downloader of any kind. So enjoy...

How to Sort and Manage All Your Videos?

Really, it depends. Videos are not like photos or music. They really come in different flavors.

Music tracks are for listening, generally in sequence: albums, shuffle, smart computer playlists or human-designed DJ playlists. But all music tracks are roughly equivalent in the way you use them.

Photos are either personal life pieces or art. They fit together in albums, events or slideshows. But all photos are roughly equivalent in the way you use them.

Today you have several great options to manage your digital music (iTunes, WinAmp, SongBird...) and the same goes for your photos (Picasa, iPhoto...). You might have noticed how recent music software enables you to manage video tracks similarly to music tracks, and photo software enables you to manage your videos as if they were photos.

This is all wrong if you ask me. Videos are of different kinds, which are consumed differently.

Say you like movies. In what order do you watch them? It mostly doesn't matter.
Now what about TV series. I guess you like to watch season after season and episodes in sequence, right? Although you might watch a movie several times if you're a fan, that must happen less for series.

But let's not stop there. What about music videos and concerts of your favorite bands. You might play them time and time again, just like audio tracks. Actually you might want to convert these concert videos to MP3 and sync them on your iPod.

Is that all? No, I haven't even mentioned personal videos. Those you might want to play before diner to show your family, or once in the evening while having a few beers with your friends to remember the old days. In that case it also makes perfect sense to send them the video so they too can add it to their personal collection.

And it goes on: podcasts and TV shows are different, the kid's cartoons too, and of course adult videos is another kind that needs special attention...

So, how do you manage all that diversity of video types and usage. How do you sort them? please I wanna know!

PUMP Video software incremental release 0.7.4 came out a couple of days ago, and adds a few things to the Preview 2 (0.7.3) from May 12.

PUMP is still in private beta but this new version of PUMP is available through the "Check for update" feature if you have a previous version. The checking is done either at start-up if you checked that setting or from the Help menu. If you don't have PUMP, sign-up for an invitation.

Google Roi de la Recherche de Torrents

It would surprise no one if I told you that you can search for torrents on Google. Why not? Well, anything can be found on Google.

So, what's the deal?

Yesterday, you would have searched for something on google and added the keyword "torrent", or if you were an expert, maybe tried to add some fancy query using the google syntax.

A better solution is available now, based on a customized google search engine, and it seems very promising. What difference does it make in the results? I honestly don't know. Try it and tell me what you think.

Anyways, it does challenge any optinion you might have on the topic of legal vs. illegal torrent search engines, right?

Rights Holders Adressing the Market of Piracy Sounds Just Right

Rewarding would-be BitTorrent pirates sounds like a strange idea, but a smart one if you look hard.

Read this story on TorrentFreak about a chick who was seeking to download a movie using BitTorrent, didn't find it but got an invite to view it legitimately, offered by Miramax, acting as the forward-thinking right-holder in that particular case.

Actually, Internet piracy is one of the most vivid realms of content lovers. Whether you sanction the behavior is not the point here, I mean people download the stuff they love, or stuff they want to discover. They are hungry for content and as such, Internet piracy is a market that legitimate content publishers must address one way or another.

How to address this market is the main question and one which, when it is answered, will probably restore faith in the content industry and make the Internet the MAIN entertainment media, above television. Don't you think so?

Numerama, toujours au fait de l'actu des medias numériques nous informe que :

"Ça n'était pas qu'une sortie improvisée. Quelques semaines après le directeur de la Guilde des Auteurs, c'est le président du lobby des auteurs américains qui prend sa plus belle plume pour demander dans le New York Times que les machines qui lisent à voix haute des livres électroniques achetés par leur propriétaire payent des droits supplémentaires."

A mon avis c'est que le début de ce genre d'histoires.

En plus un robot pourrait très bien lire un livre papier, donc ce n'est pas qu'une histoire de Kindle ou de eBook.

Alors, quid de la protection de la propriété intellectuelle et autres clashs juridiques quand l'ordinateur qui manipule un contenu ou un service pour vous est en fait un robot, avec ce que ça implique en terme d'interface, d'intelligence et d'autonomie ?
