French software company zSlide™ announces the launch of a P2P e-Mail service to send attachments of virtually any size: podmailing.com (formerly zSlideMail).
Thanks to podmailing.com, users will be able to send files in excess of 1 gigabyte: over 500 high resolution photos or 4 hours of personal videos. And no need to change their habits: users will keep their e-Mail addresses unchanged, and their standard e-Mail software or web-mail account.
In order to finalize podmailing.com's offer, and include the features demanded by the users, zSlide™ organizes a private beta-test phase. Sign-up is free and already open at the following URL: http://www.podmailing.com. The first users will be quickly convinced of the advantages of such a service which eliminates much of the usual hurdles. "Until now, you had to slice files into smaller pieces or try and compress them, or go through an FTP server: such tricky maneuvers..." explains Bruno Carsenti, managing director of zSlide™. "podmailing.com proposes a simple way to transfer large attachments. Based on e-Mail and P2P, it will be free for the users".
P2P is the bête noire of old-time Music and Movie majors, but this technology is indispensable to realize the full potential of the Internet. "By dramatically reducing costs, P2P makes the Internet much more competitive compared to the other networks, thereby fostering new business opportunities" explains Louis Choquel, CEO of zSlide™. "If anything, regulations should provide a frame that enables P2P Internet to legitimately compete with the other networks".
That is partly addressed by the controversial French copyright bill DADVSI which has just been approved by the National Assembly (lower house, March 21, 2006), as it enforces strong principles of interoperability and free competition. On the downside, it also plans sanctions against P2P software publishers in France, whereas legal P2P offers are surfacing in other countries.
"In the coming weeks we hope to meet with the politicians in charge" declares Bruno Carsenti, managing director. "We are certain of the legitimacy of our offer, but since the DADVSI bill passed, we are moving through a mine field: we could risk 3 years of prison and a 300,000 euros fine. It gets harder to innovate and compete efficiently in the high-tech sector in these conditions."
